Marburg Colloquy

The Marburg Colloquy was a meeting at Marburg Castle, Marburg, Hesse, Germany, which attempted to solve a disputation between Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli over the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It took place between 1 October and 4 October 1529.

Leipzig Disputation

A public debate concerning the doctrines of free will and grace in June and July 1519 at Pleissenburg Castle in Leipzig, Germany to discuss Martin Luther’s teachings. Johann Eck representing the Holy Roman Empire invited Luther to join the debate and expanded the terms to include matters the existence of purgatory, the sale of indulgences, the need for and methods of penance and the legitimacy of papal authority. Consequently, Pope Leo X censored Luther and threatened him with excommunication from the Catholic Church.  The threeat became action later.

Diet of Worms

An imperial assembly called by Charles V. Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire at which Martin Luther refused to recant his public statements about the Catholic Church. As a consequence, Luther was declared a heretic and subject to death.

Thomas Audley

Thomas Audley, 1st Baron Audley of Walden was an English barrister and judge who served as Lord Chancellor of England from 1533 to 1544.  He supported the Henry VIII’s annulment of marriage from Catherine of Aragon, the subsequent marriage and execution of with Anne Boleyn, and the marriage to Jane Seymour. He also aided in the dissolution of Henry’s marriage to Anne of Cleves following Seymour’s death.
