Lesson Two An Unexpected Messiah
Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most influential figures in human history. But who was he really? Did Jesus intend to start a worldwide religion? Would he recognize the churches built in his name? Is he merely a historical figure, or does his influence extend to our lives today? These aren’t simple questions, but they are important. The Bible paints the picture of a miracle worker and the Son of God. Yet, historians search for clues about the ‘real’ Jesus – a man living in the Roman Empire two thousand years ago. This lesson is about Jesus’ story and His promise that has shaped the world.
Jesus did not merely deliver a set of rules or moral guidelines. His teachings centered on a profound message of internal transformation, of a radical new relationship with God based on love, forgiveness, and personal sacrifice. He challenged existing religious structures with a path of spiritual renewal, promising freedom from the burdens of sin and the hope of eternal salvation.
Jesus spoke to the marginalized, the poor, and the outcast, offering solace and acceptance that transcended the societal divisions of his time. His emphasis on love and compassion challenged existing power structures and offered hope for a more just world.
The Historical Jesus
The historical Jesus refers to Jesus of Nazareth as a figure who lived in 1st-century Galilee, within the context of the Roman Empire and Jewish traditions. Historical accounts offer direct, independent accounts of past events, societies, and people and help us understand the circumstances in the lives of those in the past.
The Biblical Jesus
The Bible presents Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament, and the unique Son of God. He is both fully human and fully divine. His teachings focus on the Kingdom of God, personal salvation, love for God and neighbor, forgiveness, and a call to ethical living. Through his sacrificial death on the cross and resurrection, Jesus atoned for the sins of humanity, offering salvation and eternal life to those who believe in him.
